Melissa Abache works as the Global Engagement Manager at Koc University in Istanbul, Turkey. Working under the Vice President for Research and Development she manages new partnerships with scholarship awarding bodies to bring sponsored graduate students to the institution as well as coordinating international undergraduate and graduate student marketing and recruitment. Under this remit, she has identified and developed new scholarship programs that support displaced and refugee students at her institution, mainly from Syria and the MENA region. She also supports the development of new international research collaborations with partner universities and was the project coordinator of the Erasmus+ KA2 project HEIDA between 2014-2016 related to the use of data and indicators for internationalisation of HEIs. She is one of the founding members of the Internationalization of Turkish Research Universities (ITRU) Group since 2014 and champions initiatives to bring together the best of Turkish research with other world-class universities. She is now leading the internal efforts to implement the university’s Strategic Internationalization Plan (2017-2020). She is originally from Caracas, Venezuela and received her BSc in Urban Planning from the Universidad Simon Bolivar and her MSc in Environment and Development Studies from the London School of Economics and Political Sciences.
